shoulder Replacement Surgery Tailored for You

Shoulder injuries and chronic shoulder pain can be very debilitating and can make doing basic things like reaching for items on a shelf or lifting bags and purses painful or impossible. Shoulder injuries can make it difficult or impossible to work or play the sports you love. If you’ve experienced any common shoulder symptoms/causes like stiffness, inflammation, swelling, or shoulder pain after sleeping, you should set up an appointment for treatment.

Maybe you’ve considered shoulder pain treatment, but you’re worried treatment will require surgery. You’re worried a shoulder surgery could be invasive or lead to a long recovery period. That’s why the expert physicians at San Antonio Orthopædic Specialists take a multimodal and personalized approach to reduce recovery time and to get you back to doing what you love most, faster. On average, our patients spend 1-2 days fewer in observation than they would at a hospital.

What Does A Shoulder Replacement Entail?

Shoulder replacement surgery is a procedure in which the shoulder joint is replaced with metal and plastic components to alleviate pain in the shoulder resulting from arthritis. There are two main types of shoulder replacements. These are anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. Anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty is indicated in patients with advanced osteoarthritis with an intact rotator cuff. Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is a procedure that is performed in the setting of arthritis with a rotator cuff tear or in instances of a massive, irreparable rotator cuff tear that is causing pain.

MORE Types of Surgery

  • Arthroscopy

  • Minimally invasive surgery

  • Rotator cuff tear repair, inclusive of complex multi-tendon tears

  • Arthroscopic repair of anterior rotator cuff tears (subscapularis)

  • Surgical and non-surgical treatment of rotator cuff impingement/bursitis/calcific tendinitis

  • Labral tear repair

  • Shoulder joint instability/dislocations (acute and chronic)

  • Clavicle dislocations (shoulder “separations”)

  • Biceps tendinitis / rupture / dislocation

  • Acromioclavicular joint (Ac joint) arthritis

  • Open treatment of pectoralis tears

  • Non-surgical and surgical treatment of frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)

WHEN SHOULD YOU CONSIDER A SHOULDER REPLACEMENT?

Shoulder replacement surgery should be considered when conservative treatments (rest, ice, NSAIDs, physical therapy, injections, etc.) have failed to provide pain relief or restore function.

WHAT DOES THE RECOVERY LOOK LIKE?

After surgery, you can expect improved pain relief and return to activities that you previously enjoyed doing. In the immediate post-operative period, you will be immobilized in a sling while you begin physical therapy that will focus on regaining your range of motion. Most patients will spend a single night in observation at the hospital before returning home. As physical therapy progresses and healing is allowed to occur, you will progress to regaining strength in order to return you to the activities you love doing most.

How Much Does A Shoulder Replacement Cost?

If you’re worried you will not be able to get the procedures you need because of an expensive shoulder replacement cost, don’t be! We will work closely with you to make sure you can pay for the treatments you need. All costs are set by the physician for each individual patient, and you will always see the rates before we perform any procedures or treatments.
