Joint Replacement Team
Louis S. Stryker, M.D., F.A.A.O.S.
Adult Reconstruction, Joint Replacement
Dr. Stryker is a fellowship-trained surgeon specializing in rapid recovery joint replacement. The multimodal approach he has developed includes rehabilitation and narcotic sparing protocols built on the foundation of less invasive surgical techniques, including direct anterior hip replacement and muscle sparing knee surgery.
Dr. Stryker also provides an array of non-operative treatment modalities and is committed to providing personalized care according to each patient’s specific needs.
Dr. Stryker is a native of San Antonio, earning his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University and his medical degree at UT Medical School at Houston. He then went on to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for his training in orthopaedic surgery followed by a fellowship in adult reconstruction at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Stryker has taught joint replacement techniques to residents, fellows and practicing orthopedic surgeons, spoken at local, regional and national orthopedic meetings and has published numerous original scientific articles and book chapters.
Dr. Stryker has also been active in orthopedic societies serving in leadership roles in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the Texas Orthopaedic Association.
Adam I. Harris, M.D., F.A.A.O.S.
Adult Reconstruction, Joint Replacement
Dr. Harris is known for introducing tissue sparing techniques for hip and knee replacement to San Antonio and South Texas. These techniques are distinguished that they do not cut into muscles and in that they limit or eliminate the use of force to complete the surgery. They allow for a more rapid recovery than was possible before or is possible with other techniques.
The direct anterior hip replacement, combined with some aspects of other tissue-sparing techniques, results in a very rapid return to normal function. Patients are usually ready to walk home the evening of or the morning after surgery. Most patients note only soreness, no pain. Patients who receive total knee replacements are also walking the same day and are often ready to go home the day after. In both cases, home health or formal inpatient rehabilitation are rarely needed. Dr. Harris has several instruments, currently patent pending, that facilitate these approaches and improve accuracy and reliability.
Dr. Harris trained at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center under Dr. Jorge Galante, an internationally recognized pioneer and expert in adult reconstruction. He earned top honors at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, and graduated cum laude from Yale majoring in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. Originally in San Antonio as part of a large group, Dr. Harris founded San Antonio Orthopaedic Specialists in 2002 in order to maintain the focus on individual patient care. Dr. Harris wrote the mission statement for the group and invites you to become part of our family.
